Guitar Hero Now Gigging With His Wife

My Guitar Lessons tutor Ron Sayer and his wife Charlotte Sayer, from Norfolk, have been performing together, and with their own bands, on the music circuit for more than 20 years. The last time they regularly worked as a duo was some 15 years as Spider Murphy doing rock cover songs. Now they have “unplugged”, and are set to launch a new acoustic show, with a difference at Sheringham Little Theatre later this month.

It will see Ron combining his acoustic guitar with a “looper” which drives rhythmic riffs and bass behind the melody, tapping the guitar body for snare sounds, and using an amplified foot block to beat out a bass drum. Charlotte provides vocals and extra percussion. They are using their new sound to put a different and distinctive slant on to some well-known songs.

They include rock numbers such as Queen’s Somebody to Love, the Kings of Leon’s Use Somebody, Jessie J’s Price Tag, Daft Punk’s Get Lucky, a chilled version of Soft Cell’s Tainted Love, and the Jackson 5’s I Want You Back with a jazzy feel. The duo, calling themselves Sayer, will also do some more standardised acoustic songs such as Eva Cassidy’s Over the Rainbow.

Ron said: “We used to do a few acoustic numbers as part of the Spider Murphy set, and we wanted to do music that is all live – because so many bands play over backing tracks these days.” The idea was hatched about six months ago and they are it will work as a show in its own right, but could also slice into the set for their current main band Ron Sayer Junior – which tours blues venues.

Sayer are at Sheringham Little Theatre on Saturday November 22 at 7.30pm. For tickets call 01263 822347 or visit sheringhamlittletheatre.com. The couple’s bigger band will playing at the New Year’s Eve event at Davenport’s Magic Kingdom in North Walsham. Tickets £15. Call 01692 405254
