Engaging Students on the Autistic Spectrum

This interactive musical day informs those working, or wishing to work, with young people on the autistic spectrum.  You will learn a variety of methods you can utilise as a musician to engage and communicate with young people on the spectrum.

We will explore:

– Sensory and communication needs, and creating an environment that nurtures musical expression.

– Finding the right balance between structure and freedom in both one to one and group work.

– Behaviours of young people with autism.

– Tools and musical resources, for children and young adults on the spectrum.

– Rhythms and melodies that promote social interaction.

– Creative composition and songwriting

–  How to encourage greater participant-led music-making and bespoke resources that might encourage this

Participants are invited to bring an instrument they might use in a group session – and/or their own singing voice.  Wherever possible, repertoire will be shared aurally (without score), so participants are encouraged to record the session.
