iSolo wireless guitar microphone

If you have an acoustic instrument and decide that you would like to either use this instrument in a live situation that requires amplification or simply record some music on it, you are faced with a number of obstacles. These can largely be bundled into three categories: Equipment cost, sound quality and equipment setup. Unless you have a comfortable budget and plenty of free time each time you wish to set up any recording equipment, there aren’t too many good options out there for you.

People have been dealing with this problem for decades. In time sensitive situations, where you want to record an idea before it dissipates into the ether, it is often quicker and easier to simply record it on your phone and hope that when the time comes for you to listen to it later, you will actually be able to make any sense out of it.

Enter the iSolo. Yes, there is actually a point to our moaning. Musicians everywhere now have a viable option to get rid of this particular musical itch. Put simply this is a small and portable wireless microphone and receiver that can be quickly and easily set up for both private recording and live playback situations.

iSolo was successfully funded on Indiegogo back in February 2016 and what it promises almost sounds a little too good to be true. So, does it actually work?

In short the answer is ‘yes’. If you are happy to trust us on that then please jump to the end where you can find links on where to buy one. Enjoy yourself and you’re welcome. If you’re not quite ready to trust  just yet, then read on and we shall see how we go.  The iSolo is made up of three main pieces of equipment. You will need a combination of two of these pieces, depending on the situation you find yourself in.

The iSolo Microphone/Transmitter is arguable the most important part of the iSolo. It needs to be charged before use and sits neatly onto your instrument. The actual microphone itself can be moved and adjusted to suit your desired sound and setup and is made up of a couple of simple buttons; one button to turn it on and pair it with the receiver and another button to control the gain. Nice and easy.

Next up is the iSolo Recording kit. This USB receiver can be plugged into your laptop or phone in order for you to record on the go with minimal fuss. It works great and received the signal without any breaks or quality loss. Good job whoever made the little thing.

Lastly, we have the iSolo Live. This is a slightly more complicated bit of equipment, designed to cater for live environments. To set up you simply turn the iSolo microphone on, pair it with the receiver pedal and crack on. There are some lovely dials and knobs for you to play with, which alter the sound slightly. There are volume and low cut filters to help get the sound you want from the kit.

The output is a simple jack lead, so you can have this as part of your pedal setup or simply connect to the PA or amp as appropriate. The pedal has both a battery and DC input, so you shouldn’t get caught short without any juice.

The good news is that the iSolo works. It successfully transmits your music across the room to either your home recording hub or your live rig, without any apparently blips, gaps in transmission or data loss. The better news is that it doesn’t just work; it works really well.

Recording acoustic instruments has always been a bit of a bugbear; even electric–acoustic guitar of choice has a dubious sound when you plug in the audio jack to the base of the guitar; it just doesn’t sounds quite right.

The iSolo on the other hand gives you more control over the sound you want, with some variable controls on the equipment and the adjustable placement of the microphone itself. you will be genuinely impressed with the sound quality that this little bit of kit manages to pickup, transmit and successfully receive.

The most important thing however is how easy it is to set up the iSolo. Once you have understood how to set up and pair the various bits of equipment, it is really simple and really quick. This is especially important when you are using this in a live environment where you often don’t have much time to set yourself up on stage before you are due to start playing. It is also a major benefit when it comes to doing some recording at home.

Perhaps it is just us, but to be truthful many of us can’t be bothered to go through the hassle of setting up a bunch of equipment for a recording session just to get down a little idea or two. Also, depending on where you are and what you have available at the time it is often simply not possible and you are left with the option of either using your phone’s microphone or not bothering at all.

The iSolo equipment required for recording is tiny, in fact it comes in a compact little zip pouch, which you can carry around with you so you’re ready to go whenever to mood takes you. It fits a perfect gap in the current market and will be of great benefit to those who have one.

The iSolo is currently in its early stages of release, but we expect really big things from this product.
