06th February 1958 George Harrison joined the Quarrymen, the group named after John Lennon’s Quarry Bank School. Also in the group were Paul McCartney, Len Garry, Eric Griffiths and John Lowe.
05th February 1970 David Bowie recorded four songs for John Peel’s Sunday Concert Radio 1 show. It was guitarist Mick Ronson’s first appearance with Bowie who went
on to work with Bowie as one of the Spiders from Mars.
03rd February 1973 Elton John began a three-week run at No1 on the Billboard US singles chart with ‘Crocodile Rock’. It was the first of his five US No1 singles.
21st February 1975 David Bowie released ‘Young Americans’ as a single, which became a breakthrough hit for Bowie in the United States. The backing vocal arrangement came at the suggestion of soul singer Luther Vandross.
09th February 1987 Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush were declared Best Solo Artists at the Brit Awards in London. Other award winning acts included Paul Simon, Dire Straits, The Housemartins and The Pet Shop Boys.
12th February 1997 David Bowie received a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame.
22nd February 2002 Phonographic Performance Ltd launched performersmoney.com for artists to check if they were owed any of the £10 million in unclaimed money. It showed that Michael Jackson was owed £100,000 for ‘Say, Say, Say’, Stevie Wonder had money owing for ‘Ebony And Ivory’ and Ray Davies of The Kinks was owed a six-figure fee for ‘You Really Got Me’. Director Dominic McGonigal also declared “If anyone has seen Rick Astley, please let him know that he is still earning money for his hits!”
