Shock as Errol guitarist Morgan Nicol Dies Aged 21

Tributes have poured in for a Tayside musician who died aged just 21. Errol man Morgan Nicol, who enjoyed success with two bands in the area, passed away on Monday.

He was one third of Dundee-based metal band Laceration, who released their debut album Severing The Divine Iniquity on New Standard Elite records.

The band had built up a strong local support, and also scheduled gigs overseas in Germany and Belgium.

Almost 6,000 people had “liked” the Facebook page which detailed the activities of Morgan, guitarist and singer Hamish Maguire, and drummer Tom Walker. Morgan also played in the East Scotland punk outfit Frown.

Bandmate David Bryceland said he would be impossible to replace.

“It’s had a huge impact on us, but more so on his friends and family,” he told the Tele.

“We were doing really well with Morgan. We had done an EP and there aren’t a lot of bass players like Morgan — he was a rare bass player.

“He did finger-picking and a lot of people can’t do that.

“He was the one that brought a lot of talent to the table — he was super talented.

“His commitment was incredible. His heart was right into music and his bass playing was unbelievable.

“He was a totally rare breed of bass player and we’ll never see talent like that.

“He was always upbeat and smiling all the time — it’s just a shock. He was funny as well, but took the music seriously.”

A tribute posted on the band’s Facebook page added: “We heard the devastating news that our band mate and, more importantly, our friend Morgan Nicol had passed away.

“Morgan was a brilliant person. Kind, funny and an incredibly gifted musician.

“Our deepest condolences go to his family, his friends and anyone who had the fortune of spending time in his company. We are all going to miss him dearly.”

Friends and fans left tributes to the former Blairgowrie High School student on Frown’s page.

Craig Phillip said: “Sad times for you all but take joy from the music you have created together as you have that forever more.”

A spokesman for Police Scotland said: “Officers attended Kinnoull Hill, Perth, on Monday afternoon, where they discovered the body of a 21-year-old local man. There are no suspicious circumstances and, as with all sudden deaths, a report has been submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”
