Paco de Lucia Passes Away at 66

Flamenco guitar legend Paco de Lucia has died at the age of 66 in the Mexican resort of Cancun.

Paco was on a holiday when he reportedly suffered a sudden heart attack while playing with his children on the beach. He was taken to a local hospital where he passed away on late Tuesday Mexico time.

Miguel Nunez, the spokesman of the guitarist’s hometown of Algeciras, confirmed that the preliminary cause of death appears to be a heart attack. The city is reportedly also planing to declare several days of mourning.

De Lucia will remain immortalized through his work, which includes a series of flamenco efforts in the 1970s, as well as later shifts towards the classical and jazz guitar domain. His career also includes notable collaborations with such musical greats as Eric Clapton, John McLaughlin, Al Di Meola, Chick Corea and more.

Paco will undoubtedly remain to be known as the single greatest flamenco guitarist of our time. Rest in peace.
