Soundgarden Planning Rare Tracks Album

Soundgarden guitarist Kim Thayil shared details on the band’s highly-anticipated B-sides release, calling it an able to stand out on its own.

Featuring non-album tracks previously available only as singles, soundtracks and similar releases, the album is expected to drop sometime during 2014. “I see that as another album, you know, as a stand-on-its-own album,” Thayil told the Pulse of Radio (via Blabbermouth). “I don’t see it as a compilation, like a greatest hits or anything, because it’s an album where a lot of these songs that are previously uncompiled will be available.”

As for the group’s new studio effort, Kim noted that “the band has talked about that. That’s something that we’ll look at in the next two years,” he added.

The guitarist also discussed the B-sides effort during a separate Rolling Stone interview, confirming that he’ll be the one taking care the back catalogue while some of his bandmates are fulfilling their obligations with other acts.

“Right now, a couple of guys are committed to other tours – Chris [Cornell] is doing a solo acoustic tour and Matt [Cameron] is out on the road with Pearl Jam,” Thayil explained. “So this year [2014] is going to be kind of tough for touring. But I will be tending to the catalogue, compiling the B-sides record, which I first announced back in 1995 … it’s been almost 20 years of backburner neglect.”

The latest Soundgarden studio effort, “King Animal,” saw its release in November 2012 through even Four Entertainment.
