‘Buckle Up for Chi’ Campaign Starts in Honor of Deftones Bassist

Driving safety campaign has been started in memory of late Deftones bassist Chi Cheng. Cheng died earlier this year aged 42, four years after a car accident left him in a partially conscious state.

The campaign, titled “Buckle Up for Chi,” plans to raise awareness concerning seatbelt use. A statement has been released regarding their aims: “‘Buckle Up for Chi’ was established in an effort to honor the memory of an amazing man who’s life was tragically changed after he was involved in a car accident in which he was not wearing his seatbelt.

This campaign serves as a tribute to not only the legacy he left behind, but to the lives that will be saved because of seat belt awareness.”

Cheng formed Deftones with Chino Moreno, Stephen Carpenter and Abe Cunningham in 1988. The group went on to release seminal albums associated with the nu-metal genre, including “Around the Fur” and “White Pony.” Their their latest album, “Koi No Yokan,” was released in 2012.
