Soundgarden Has A Future

Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell believes the band’s reunion has been so successful there’s no reason why they can’t make more music in the future.

The band went back into action in 2010 as a result of a meeting over corporate management. That led to the release of last year’s well-received King Animal album.

They’ll wind down after their current tour, which ends next week in London – but Cornell thinks they’ll be back in due course.

He tells GMI Rock: “I think the overall attitude about keeping it going, and the way we want to treat it to keep it going, seems to be really good.

“There’s nothing stopping us from continuing to make records and continuing to play shows. We had a great experience doing the album, and since we’ve come back together everything’s been that way.”

Cornell is convinced things have gone so well because they chose to focus on music rather than anything else.

“There hasn’t been any tension, specifically surrounding peripheral stuff,” he reflects. “I think it was us making a conscious decision to not be influenced other than us four wanting to do it – not putting a business timeline on it.”

All four members of the band will remain busy during their downtime: Cornell will launch a solo tour of the US next month, while guitarist Kim Thayill will turn his attention to a Soundgarden box set. Bassist Ben Shepherd released a solo album, In Deep Owl, last month, while drummer Matt Cameron will attend to his Pearl Jam duties as they launch new record Lightning Bolt.
