Protests are taking place in Berlin ahead of tonight’s performance. The American Jewish Committee are upset by a giant inflatable pig and other stage props, including a Star Of David, that they claim are “Anti-Semitic cheap propaganda”.
The group are currently protesting at Berlin’s Olympic Stadium, where Waters is due to perform tonight (4 September). Deidre Berger from the AJC’s Berlin office said:
“On the evening of the Jewish New Year celebration of Rosh Hashana, of all things, Waters is planning his scandal spectacle in the Berlin Olympic Stadium, which was abused by the Nazis for scores of propaganda events.”
The Pink Floyd bassist previously responded to a similar complaint in Belgium, denying claims of anti-semitism with an open letter posted online, writing:
“[The inflatable pig] has appeared at every Wall Show since September 2010, some 193 shows, yours is the first complaint. Also the pig in question represents evil, and more specifically the evil of errant government. We make a gift of this symbol of repression to the audience at the end of every show and the people always do the right thing. They destroy it.”
