Dillinger Guitarist Told “You’ll Never Play Guitar Again”
Dillinger Escape Plan guitarist Ben Weinman has revealed that doctors told him he would lose the ability to play guitar after breaking his wrist last month.
Fortunately, a frantic search for a specialist doctor helped save Weinman’s guitar playing ability, and he’s set to return to the stage with the band at the Summer Slaughter tour alongside Periphery this summer.
“When the Doctor told me I broke my wrist and that this particular bone doesn’t typically heal my heart sunk. Our record had just come out and we were just getting started with its promotional cycle. I would not let this stop me,” he said.
Weinman immediately got an appointment with New York’s best hand surgeon. “I told him I had to play guitar again in a month. He said, ‘Ok, I’ll put a screw in your wrist.’ Two weeks after surgery they took my stitches and cast off and I started playing guitar again. Definitely not the most pleasant experience, but now I almost feel back to myself.”
Some good has come from the experience too; Weinman says he’s got a newfound appreciation for his guitar after coming so close to losing it, but will have to continue a delicate rehab process to get his wrist back to full strength.
