‘This Is Boston’ Benefit Concert

The Boston music scene will pull together for a benefit concert to support victims of the recent Boston marathon bomb attack.

The “THIS IS BOSTON” show pulls together several generations from the legendary local hardcore punk scene, including Converge, Slapshot, Dropdead and more.

“For me the punk and hardcore world has always been a caring world despite the volume of things,” Converge frontman Jacob Bannon told Boston.com. “It’s time to show the city that.”

The DIY ethics of the punk scene made a benefit show an obvious outlet for the local community who were devastated by two bombs near the finish line at the Boston marathon which killed at least three people and injured at least 144 more. One of the dead was an 8-year-old boy, and many had limbs amputated in the aftermath of the attack.

What started as a small show quickly snowballed into an ambitious event with some of Boston’s biggest stars, according to Mike Eleftheratos who co-hosts a monthly metal DJ night.

It was set to be a small show at his venue, but local punk legend Keith Bennett from the band Wrecking Crew reached out to his network and they had to find a new venue at the last minute. “Within hours the show had gone from an event that would bring out 70 people to something that would draw more than 700,” said Eleftheratos.

Now the event is set for Boston’s South Shore Music Hall for what the venue owners are calling “the best show in history.”

Converge’s Jacob Bannon explains how the funds from the show will be used: “Many don’t realize that many affected were not insured … many insurance companies only offer limited coverage in cases of terrorist attacks. Anything we can do to help those struggle a little less, we will.”
