Big Country Lose Bassist And Manager

Big Country have split with original bassist Tony Butler and manager Ian Grant, with Simple Minds man Derek Forbes becoming the latest addition to the band.

He joins Alarm frontman Mike Peters, founding members Bruce Watson and Mark Brzezicki plus Bruce’s son Jamie.

The band will unveil their new lineup at a free concert on New Year’s Eve in Inverness, bringing to an end a period of speculation which they admit has seemed “fractious” and “confusing”.

Big Country say in a statement: “We have been very appreciative of the efforts by original manager Ian Grant and departing bass player Tony Butler, who have both been very gracious and supportive of the new direction the band wish to follow.

“We would also like to extend heartfelt thanks to all fans and family associated with the band for their support and understanding over the last few weeks in what has appeared – outwardly at least – to be fractious, and at times confusing.

“Everything is now back on track. Let’s turn our thoughts to the future and the beginning of a new and exciting journey.”

Big Country were formed in 1982 by former Skids guitarist Stuart Adamson. The band split in 2000 and Adamson committed suicide the following year. Butler, Watson and Brzezicki reunited for a 25th anniversary tour in 2007 before splitting again. In 2010 they brought Peters and Jamie Watson into the fold.
